GAGRON FORT - JHALAWAR

Gagron Fort is a fine example of a hill and water fort. It is one of the six hill forts of Rajasthan to be a part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site list. Surrounded by the tranquil waters of the Ahu and Kalisindh rivers on three sides, the fort is indeed a sight to behold. It still retains its Rajput aura-with its barracks, magazine, palace and stables. The fort of Gagron was one of Jhala Zalim Singh’s favourite retreats and he was here when the Maharao of Bundi, Umed Singh, breathed his last in 1819. The shrine of the Sufi saint Mitthe Shah lies just outside the fort and

Restoration work of the fort is underway and already the fort looks much more welcoming.

is a popular venue for an annual fair during Moharram. Also of interest is the monastery of Saint Pipaji, a contemporary of Saint Kabir.
