Haffkine Institute was established in 1899 and is named after Dr. Waldemar Mordecai Haffkine, the scientist who invented the plague vaccine. It is supposed to have been built on the site of an old temple of Parli Vaijnath, which gave the name Parel to the adjoining village. The building was then known as Governor’s House. The Haffkine Library is one of the largest and the oldest medical libraries in the country. The majestic Durbar Hall of the Institute was decorated specially for felicitation of Prince of Wales, during his visit in 1875 to the then Governor’s House. The spacious and regal Hall measures 35 m × 10 m × 7.5 m. It has a seating capacity of 250 and is well equipped with modern audio-visual equipment, such as high quality amplifying system and LCD projection.
