Lonar crater is a saline and alkaline lake created by a meteorite impact about 52,000 years ago discovered by British Officer J E. Alexander. Geologists, ecologists, archaeologists, naturalists and astronomers have reported several studies on the various aspects of this Crater Lake ecosystem. Lonar Lake has a mean diameter of 1.2 kilometres (3,900 ft) and is about 137 metres (449 ft) below the crater rim. The mystic lake is surrounded by ancient temples, natural beauty and rich biodiversity. The lake is a bird watchers’ paradise and the town is filled with colorful ancient tradition and lifestyle.
Approximately 15 temples surround near the lake base, along the rim, and higher up, most of which stand in ruins today except for the temple of Daitya Sudan at the centre of the Lonar town. It is a fine example of early Hindu architecture and was built in honour of Vishnu’s victory over the giant Lonasur. Other temples surrounding the crater are Vishnumandir, Wagh Mahadev, Mora Mahadev, Munglyacha Mandir, Goddess Kamalaja Devia, etc. Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation organized First Lonar Mahotsav to celebrate the biodiversity of the region.
