Wilson College which started in 1832, predates the Mumbai University by 25 years which was established in 1857. Located opposite Mumbai’s Girgaum Chowpatty, the college was designed by John Adams in the domestic Victorian Gothic Style and was constructed in 1889. It is listed as a Grade III heritage structure in the city and is known for its large first-floor classrooms with interesting teakwood trusses. These classrooms are protected by deep verandahs overlooking Girgaum Chowpatty and are covered by the Mangalore tiled roof. The entrance lobby with its grand timber staircase with multi-foil circular panel design is one of the notable features of the college. The assembly hall is designed with two level balconies to accommodate an orchestra for holding functions. The teakwood balcony is supported on the teakwood decorative brackets. There is a multi-foil circular stained glass window with the college crest on it. The college also houses a chapel and a white marble courtyard fountain.
